Janus, the Roman god of beginnings for whom January is named, would surely have loved high quality bedding, and would appreciate now the great January White Sales.
January is traditionally the month that retailers take the deepest discounts on home linens—and it has been that way since 1878 when Philadelphia department store owner John Wanamaker marked down white linens to improve the dismal business in his store after the Christmas holidays. In the late 1950s, color and print sheets were added to the mix, and today’s white sales include not only sheets, but comforters, bedspreads, blankets, and towels in a rainbow of colors, along with bedding accessories, pillows, bathroom accessories, etc.
Retailers, including brick and mortar department stores such as J.C. Penney and Macy’s, and online marketplaces such as Overstock and Amazon, continue the white sale legacy. It’s common for stores such as these (Target, Pottery Barn, Nordstrom, Wayfair, Kohl’s and others also included!) to offer some serious discounts, sometimes up to 70%! These sales and specials run at different times through January, with Wayfair’s upcoming sale slated to last until the end of the month.
This is a great opportunity to buy quality sheets and new bedding at discounted prices. And, what’s most important when buying sheets? Softness. Virginia Peale, director of marketing for fine French linen firm Yves Delorme, explains that the quality of the fiber will determine the softness of a sheet. “Best are sheets made with extra-long staple cotton (meaning that the fibers are longer than 37 millimeters) such as the most desirable Egyptian cotton, Supima, and Pima,” said Peale.
Oddly enough, the one thing shoppers might not be able to find on sale, despite the namesake, are white sheets. Today, white sheets are considered an essential household staple and the most popular choice among shoppers. Therefore, regardless of the name white sale, it is the one color you will probably not find on sale.
