Williamsburg and Yorktown occupy the northwest corner of Arlington County. Many of the street names allude to Williamsburg and Yorktown’s prior inhabitants. The Powhatan tribe is known to have lived in the area prior to colonial settlement.
Minor Hill – the largest hill in Arlington – can be found in Williamsburg. This was a valuable resource during the Civil War, as the hills height allowed for observation and signal communication. After the Civil War, Williamsburg and Yorktown returned to their status as farming communities. It wasn’t until the post war boom in the 1950’s that the two communities began to flourish.
Cozy, quiet and unassuming; Life in Williamsburg and Yorktown is, generally speaking, a down to earth, hassle free experience. There is light commercial development around the intersection of Sycamore Street and Williamsburg Boulevard. The Williamsburg Shopping Center is conveniently located and features great new restaurants such as Deli Italiano and Backyard BBQ. The streets are wide and are perfect for riding bikes and jogging. Tuckahoe Park will delight children of all ages and is ideal for spring or summer picnics. The schools and proximity to East Falls Church Metro (accessible by bike, car and ART bus) are also worth mentioning. Nottingham Elementary just won the Governor's Award for Excellence and Yorktown High is consistently ranked one of the top high schools in the country.
Lee Highway is the main thoroughfare, and connects Williamsburg and Yorktown residents with I-66 and Route 7. Sycamore Street runs down to the East Falls Church Metro station. Metro bus service is also reliable. Williamsburg Boulevard and Yorktown Boulevard connect with Old Dominion.
