As is true with many areas in Fairfax County, Oakton has roots in the Civil War. Hunter Mill Road, which is a major artery through Oakton to this day, served as a key travel way or both Confederate and Union forces. Soldiers involved in both battles at Manassas, Antietam and Gettysburg used Hunter Mill. Another major road, Waple’s Mill, took its name from a mill built by Henry Maple shortly after the end of the Civil War, and it was in near continuous use until the 1920’s.
