Chevy Chase (MD)

Chevy Chase, Maryland is a large residential community located just northwest of Washington, D.C.  It is bordered on the south by Western Avenue, which serves as the dividing line between D.C. and Montgomery County, and extends north to the Capital Beltway.

The history of Chevy Chase parallels that of its sibling, known by the same name, on the other side of the D.C./Maryland border. It was initially designed as a village of about 250 acres just across the District line with a small number of big “cottages” on large lots along beautifully landscaped streets. It was served by an electric trolley line that ran along what is now Connecticut Avenue, from D.C. out to Chevy Chase Lake.

Quality of Life:

Chevy Chase has a wide variety of neighborhoods, many with their own unique characteristics created over the years by location, topography, housing styles and a strong sense of community.  Several are incorporated townships with elected governments – Chevy Chase Village, Town of Chevy Chase, Somerset, and Friendship Heights to name a few.  The Chevy Chase communities offer predominantly single family homes but the Village of Friendship Heights on the southern border is a bustling urban area with apartment living, offices, shopping, entertainment, restaurants, Whole Foods Market, and a metro stop of the same name. 

The community boasts a village-like atmosphere that is both comfortable and convenient. Within the Chevy Chase borders are two country clubs, the National 4-H Center, a section of Rock Creek Park extending from D.C. into Maryland, small neighborhood shopping areas, many schools, places of worship, a library, and the Leland Community Center. There is also a county rec center that offers classes, a playground and sports facilities. 

Downtown Bethesda is a big draw for Chevy Chase residents.  There you will find the Bethesda Metro, lots of shops including an Apple store and Barnes & Noble, restaurants, street vendors, movies, access to the Capital Crescent Trail and many small businesses.  On the weekends, it is full of folks just strolling and checking it all out. The Red Line metro at Friendship heights connects residents with the WMATA grid. Residents in the eastern part of Chevy Chase may be able to enjoy the scenic backdrop provided by Rock Creek Park.

Getting Around:

Chevy Chase’s location offers residents the ability to travel around the greater area of Montgomery County and into D.C. with relative ease and convenience.   Connecticut and Wisconsin Avenues run north to south. Western Avenue runs the length of the northwestern side of the D.C. quadrant. Residents have a short commute to Bethesda and Rockville to the north. East West Highway runs between Silver Spring and Bethesda.  Red Line metro stations are located in Friendship Heights and Bethesda and metrobus stops are located throughout the area.
