Falls Church City

The City of Falls Church is an independent city nestled between Fairfax and Arlington County. Falls Church’s history dates back to the 17th century with the establishment of a colonial settlement. It takes its name from The Falls Church, which was established in 1732. Prior to western settlement, the area was home to members of either the Anacostan or Doeg chiefdoms.  

Through most of the 19th century, Falls Church remained a rural farming community. Tobacco, wheat, corn and other produce was grown in abundance and sold at area markets. In 1948, Falls Church became an independent city.

Frequently named one of CNN's top 100 places to live in the US, the City of Falls Church offers a unique environment that almost seamlessly blends rural and suburban ideals. Thickets of dense foliage buffer the sound of well-traveled thoroughfares allowing residents to live without distraction. Neighborhoods feature a wide selection of townhomes and single-family residences.

The citizens of Falls Church share a strong sense community. Harkening back to its rural past, there is a year-round farmers market that is held in the parking lot of City Hall every Saturday. Other events, like the Annual Memorial Day Parade, Tinner Hills Blues Festival, Summer Concerts in the Park and First Fridays, also contribute to the friendly, small town atmosphere. 

The city of Falls Church operates it's own highly rated school system. There are two elementary schools, one intermediate school and one high school. George Mason High School was the first Virginia school to offer the challenging International Baccalaureate (IB) program, which offers students the possibility of earning college credit while still in high school. George Mason students consistently score well above state and national averages on standardized tests, and the school's reputation for excellence is widely known and consistently cited in national publications. The city’s two elementary schools, Mt. Daniel and Thomas Jefferson have long been recognized as schools of excellence by the U.S. Department of Education and the Virginia Department of Education. Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School, opened in 2005, serves students in grades 5-7. The middle school offers a progressive, enriching, and differentiated curriculum that challenges students to pursue a wide variety of interests in an effort to help guide future academic and career goals. It has also been recognized as a school of excellence.

Getting Around:

The City of Falls Church is ideally located within the Capital Beltway. There are two metro stops at East and West Falls Church, which run on the Orange Line. Broad Street bisects the community, linking Falls Church to Tyson’s Corner in the west and Arlington and Alexandria to the east. Residents also have easy access to I-66.
