College Park

The city of College Park is located east of Silver Spring, north of Hyattsville and inside the Capital Beltway. Its name alludes to its collegiate surroundings: College Park is home to the University of Maryland.

College Park began as a farming community centered around the Maryland Agricultural College in the mid-1800s. The city grew in size throughout the late 19th century to accommodate an expanding university and the arrival of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. It was an ideal outlet for those looking to move out of the District’s boundaries. Commercial and residential development increased and continued from the 1920s onward.

Quality of Life:

Life in College Park revolves around the Terps, an affectionate nickname for the University of Maryland Terrapins. The scene on Route 1 running through Old Town College Park is lively and features a number of bars and restaurants. The student population keeps the community moving day in and day out. Those affiliated with the college and permanent residents alike enjoy the amenities offered by the University of Maryland. The College Park Metro on the Red Line is accessible and makes getting to D.C. easy.

Getting Around:

Route 1, University Boulevard and I-495; The College Park Metro station offers Red Line service. The city is also serviced by the MARC Train
